Marcus Brian Ward, DMD

Greenville, New Bern

"Professionalism is not a label you give yourself; it's a description you hope others will apply to you."

A native of Chocowinity, NC, Dr. Ward is the consummate hands-on man who didn’t follow a traditional path to becoming a dentist. Before entering the field of dentistry, Dr. Ward bought, sold, and repossessed mobile homes, where the windshield of a big truck served as his daily office view. One might say that he knows every back road in North Carolina and quite a few others in the Eastern Standard Time Zone.

When it came time to shift gears, Dr. Ward earned a pre-med degree from East Carolina University with honors before enrolling in their dental school. There, he earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine and graduated at the top of his class. He was also invited to join the prestigious dental honor society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU).

As fellow dentists and associates well know, Dr. Ward is always moving and considers work a privilege. If something needs to be done at the clinic—whether it’s changing a light bulb, performing plumbing repairs, or helping clean rooms—Dr. Ward is always available and pitches in. According to him, “In all my working life, I have never asked anyone who worked for me to do something that I wouldn’t do myself.”

Dr. Ward is an active member of the American Dental Association and has completed numerous training and continuing education programs in dental implants, IV sedation, periodontal care, and oral surgery. As an adjunct faculty member at the East Carolina School of Dental Medicine, he also teaches residents how to place dental implants at the ECU Service Learning Center in Brunswick County, NC.

Thanks to Dr. Ward’s efforts, Eastern Pines Dental offers many advanced services to patients, including molar root canals, oral surgery, dental implants, gingival grafting, Botox for TMJ treatment, and IV sedation, to name a few.

Before opening Eastern Pines Dental, Dr. Ward owned and operated Mid-Atlantic Property Management, a manufactured housing repossession company in Washington, NC, for approximately 20 years. Following dental school, Dr. Ward worked at dental practices in Shallotte, NC, Southport, NC, and New Bern, NC, before establishing Eastern Pines Dental in Greenville, NC.

When he’s not at work, Dr. Ward is an active member of F3 Washington and enjoys working out, being outdoors, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with his family and Labrador retrievers.

His hard work, friendliness, and relentless commitment to providing the best dentistry the field has to offer set the tone for his practices. Whether patients visit Eastern Pines in Greenville or New Bern, they receive the same excellent care.

"Do today what others won’t, so tomorrow you can do what others can’t."

Joshua Stephen Lovick, DMD

Greenville

"My ties to this part of the state are deep, and it means so much to be able to continue to do something that my family has always done here: serve people."

A native of Kinston, NC, Dr. Lovick understands the importance of hard work and friendly service.

“For over 80 years, my family has been serving breakfast and lunch to eastern North Carolina,” says Dr. Lovick. “At Lovick's Cafe, everybody knows everybody. I was there every summer growing up, cleaning tables and washing dishes. That’s where I learned to work.” However, with five older cousins in line to take over the cafe, Dr. Lovick knew his future lay elsewhere.

With a passion for learning and sports, Dr. Lovick excelled both in the classroom and on the athletic field. He attended East Carolina University, where he was a member of the ECU Honors College and a freshman catcher for the Pirates on the baseball team. “It was a real privilege to play so close to home and represent the Pirates on the baseball field. Those were some great memories.”

After completing his undergraduate studies at ECU, he remained there to earn his Doctorate of Dental Medicine while also serving as class president. Still motivated to pursue more, Dr. Lovick was accepted into a rigorous General Practice Residency at Palmetto Health Richlands Hospital (now Prisma Health) in Columbia, South Carolina. There, he was trained in IV sedation, dental implants, third molar surgery, and cosmetic dentistry. This training also included opportunities to work at the local VA Hospital and Community Health Center, as well as for patients with special needs in the OR setting. “My residency training was integral to the dentist I am today,” says Dr. Lovick. “Not only did I learn techniques, but we served people.” Since then, he has completed over 500 hours of continuing education in a variety of dental disciplines.

As the time to choose where to practice approached, Dr. Lovick says he didn’t have to think very hard. “Eastern North Carolina is my home. My ties to this part of the state are deep, and it means so much to be able to continue to do something that my family has always done here: serve people.”

“The opportunity to work at Eastern Pines has been a blessing. Not only do we provide a full range of treatment options, but we also pride ourselves on building relationships with our patients to help them achieve their dental goals. We don’t primarily tell patients what they need; rather, we try to meet them where they are. And at the end of the day, I think that’s what people are really after.”

Away from the office, you’ll likely find Dr. Lovick spending time as a husband and father to his wife and three daughters. In whatever free time remains, he continues to grow through reading, exercise, and spending time with friends. “The Lord continues to amaze me every day,” he says. “Some days are harder than others, but every day is a blessing.”

Alison Moseley, DDS

Greenville

"There’s nothing like hearing patients tell you that they used to hate coming to the dentist, but now because of you, they like it."

Dr. Moseley was only seven when her family moved from the village of Tredegar in Wales (UK) to the Raleigh/Wake Forest area.

While earning a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from East Carolina University, Dr. Moseley had a transformative experience during a public health rotation. A free dental day sparked her interest in dentistry, as she was drawn to its hands-on nature—something she felt was lacking in nursing. At the same time, she realized that she didn’t like the bureaucracy of working in a hospital setting.

After completing her nursing degree, Dr. Moseley attended the University of Maryland's School of Dentistry, the oldest dental school in the United States. After graduating, she returned to East Carolina University for a one-year advanced education in general dentistry residency at ECU’s facility in Brunswick County.

Following her residency, Dr. Moseley returned to the Greenville area. When she became familiar with Eastern Pines and met Dr. Ward, she knew that working here would be a great fit.

“I love that Eastern Pines has all the latest, greatest equipment and that we don’t have to send patients out for work to be done. We all try to make everyone feel like family when they come for treatment. We have a lot of people who come in who haven’t had a cleaning in ten or fifteen years, but we don’t judge. We do our best to make their experience a positive one.”

Dr. Moseley enjoys the challenge of dentistry and the opportunity to connect with patients. “There’s nothing like having a good day with your patients; they’re joking with you, and you’re helping them out.”

Of course, dental work can be challenging, and like most dentists, Dr. Moseley strives for perfection in every procedure. She goes above and beyond to treat her patients and works hard to build strong, long-term relationships with them.

As the only female dentist at Eastern Pines, Dr. Moseley is well aware that dentistry remains a male-dominated profession.

“As a woman, you have to work a little harder sometimes to build patients’ trust. Of course, some patients don’t want to be treated by a female, while others immediately trust you more because you’re a woman."

When she’s not treating patients, Dr. Moseley enjoys going to the gym to lift weights. She also loves spending time with her Belgian Malinois, Caine, and visiting her family in Raleigh.

Dr. Moseley is one of the many reasons patients keep coming back to Eastern Pines Dental.

Dalas Young, DMD

Greenville, New Bern

"I have Dr. Pepper under my desk and candy in my drawer, so I’m in no place to judge, and I don’t expect my patients not to eat sweets... but I do floss my teeth—remember, only floss the teeth you want to keep!"

A native of Havelock, NC, Dr. Young attended East Carolina University for his undergraduate studies, graduating Summa Cum Laude. After graduation, he worked as a paralegal for ten years, but something was missing. “We dealt with people who had all kinds of problems—criminal issues, child custody battles, heavy stuff—but I had to remain detached. It wasn’t for me.”

A friend in dental school urged Dr. Young to check out the field. He liked what he saw and decided to attend ECU’s dental school. He’s never looked back:

“I love working with my hands and working directly with people to help them, both of which I’m good at, and both of which you do a ton of in dentistry,” he says.

Dr. Young’s first experience as a dental patient came later in life. “While I was growing up, my folks didn’t have dental insurance, so I was 18 when I first went to the dentist before volunteering overseas in Portugal for my church. By that time, my mouth was a mess.”

Dr. Young uses that experience to relate to his own patients. He also strives to create a fun atmosphere while ensuring his patients’ needs are met and their voices are heard. Dr. Young enjoys working at Eastern Pines because, “This is a choosy practice. If you don’t do quality work, you’re gone. I’ve worked at other offices that didn’t have the same high standards.”

Outside the office, Dr. Young and his family enjoy hiking, traveling, mountain biking, playing board games, watching movies, and going on weekend adventures. He also enjoys metal detecting, riding ATVs, and reading.

Of course, Dr. Young continues to expand his practice areas to include oral surgery, IV sedation, and implant dentistry. His goal is to never stop learning so he can be the best practitioner for his patients.

Craig Mize, DDS

New Bern

"I have patients, some sixteen families or so, who drive two hours from Raleigh to see me at this office because they trust me."

Dr. Mize is a native of Raleigh with deep family ties to Bath and Little Washington, where he spent his summers. Like many, Dr. Mize was introduced to dentistry at a very early age:

“I had horrible baby teeth, so I was taken to a pedodontist who extracted all my upper and lower teeth when I was between the ages of four and five. I had to endure multiple pulpotomies, but he was so nice to me throughout the entire process that I remember telling him I wanted to be like him someday.”

Not surprisingly, after graduating in 1994 with a degree in biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Mize continued his education there and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1998.

A fifth-generation military veteran, Dr. Mize served as an officer in the U.S. Navy, where he completed advanced education in general dentistry and headed the dental department aboard the USS Arctic. He was also awarded the Surface Warfare Dental Officer pin and a Navy Commendation.

After completing his Navy service, Dr. Mize opened a practice in Raleigh, which he ran for 16 years with his wife, Brittany, who served as the practice manager.

Dr. Mize is fully trained in placing dental implants, a skill he has been practicing for over 16 years. He also offers Invisalign and can fit patients with the Prosomnus appliance to help with sleep apnea.

In 2021, Dr. Mize sold his practice to focus more on being a dentist and less on running a business. He moved his family to Little Washington and worked for two years in New Bern at a different dental practice before joining Eastern Pines.

He chose Eastern Pines because of their quality of care and array of special services. “Most dental practices don’t place implants, but here, we perform surgery and offer IV sedation. If you’re looking for a dental home where you and your entire extended family can be taken care of, this is the place to be. Your whole family, including children and grandparents, will receive the best possible dental care in this area.”

“I’ve worked in a number of practices, and the dentists here are some of the most personable and professional because they empathize with their patients and strive to practice ethical dentistry. At Eastern Pines, our treatment is tailor-made for our patients, based on their needs and budget, which isn’t very common. Dentistry may have a business side to it, but we took an oath to care for people, not to make money off of them. I try to treat my patients like they’re human beings, not just a set of teeth with a bank account.”

Dr. Mize brings years of dental experience to Eastern Pines: “I may not look it, but I’ve been out of dental school for about 26 years. In my view, experience counts for a lot, often more than book or technical knowledge.”

To Dr. Mize, trust is everything: “If your patients can’t trust you and your judgment as a person and professional, then you shouldn’t be their dentist. Because if you take care of patients and treat them right, everything falls into place.”
